Due to the Current COVID-19 outbreak, International TEFL Academy Barcelona is now offering the Certificate in TEFL course through a virtual platform, until August 2020.

This gives you the flexibilty to gain your TEFL qualification working with our experienced team of tutors from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a computer, a good internet connection, and motivation to teach and learn new things and of course, an open mind!

The final qualification awarded follows exactly the same syllabus as our face-to-face 4-week intensive option, and successful candidates receive the same Level 5 accredited Certificate in TEFL.

How the course works.

This course does not require any in-person training at all. You will complete all of the training, teaching practice, and assignments online using Zoom, Moodle, and Google Drive. Don’t worry if you have not used Zoom before as we will train you how to use it before the course begins and you will get practice using it early on so that you become a proficient user and online teacher – a skill you will need when you start looking for work!

This is an intensive course and therefore, in addition to the 15-20 hours per week training sessions, you should be prepared to do an additional 2-3 hours per day dedicated to reading and written assignments, the course project, and lesson planning.

The course is divided into a coursework component and teaching practice component. Upon successful completion of the course, you will gain a TQUK Level 5 Certificate in TEFL, with the course transcript, which will show your final grades for the theoretical and practical components (you will receive two separate grades).

The course is comprised of:

– 170 hours of training – which includes class work, readings, assignments, lesson planning, work you complete at home, etc.

– 10 hours of practicum – which includes observation and student teaching with real students.

What will the virtual training be like?

From Monday to Friday during a four-hour slot, you will attend online, dynamic and practical training sessions led by our team of experienced tutors delivered via Zoom so that you can participate at the click of a button. During these training sessions, you will be able to work in pairs and small groups and collaborate as if you were in a real classroom. You will do two sessions per day on Zoom during the first four weeks of the course and complete your teaching practice in weeks four and five.

What will the virtual Teaching Practice be like?

You will teach a minimum of 6 hours of live teaching practice with real students in groups of between 2 to 8 adult students with at least two different levels. You will receive one-to-one support planning your classes, and the tutor will observe you and give you feedback on the classes you teach. You will also have the opportunity to observe your peers and give them feedback on their classes. All classes will be delivered via Zoom. As well as teaching online, the course also covers aspects of how to transfer these skills to teaching in-person classes.

As a bonus, we are currently offering the opportunity to do one teaching practice with Young Learners and/or Business English students – there is a growing need for teachers in both these areas of TEFL, and normally these are offered as additional courses or workshops. 

How am I assessed?

You will be continually assessed throughout the course and there is no final examination. Our course also takes into consideration various aspects of professionalism as well as speed of development.

You are assessed in the following areas:

1. Teaching practice

You will teach online for a total of 6 hours (minimum), working with adult classes at a minimum of two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance, but criteria to focus on for each lesson will be given throughout the course.

2. Coursework assignments

You will complete six written assignments and ten quizzes based on lesson planning and course book readings. You will also complete an in-depth language learner project, which helps to prepare you for establishing your own clients.

What will I be able to do once I have a Certificate in TEFL?

Graduates of our course typically go on to work in private language schools, teaching adult or young learner students around the world. Many also go on to teach English online or work for language training agencies. One of the great things about our TEFL qualification is that once you have it, you can work anywhere (visa permitting), or if you teach online, you could be based anywhere in the world.

When you start to look for work, be it in Spain or in any other country, we will help you come up with a plan of action and provide you with a wealth of resources to ensure you achieve your goal.
