tHE TEFL STAFF

All of the teaching staff at ITA Barcelona have a high level of education and years of experience teaching English to speakers of other languages.

We look forward to wishing you a warm welcome.

STEPHEN HALDEN

Stephen has been the director and head trainer at ITA Barcelona (was known as TESOL Training Spain) in Barcelona since 2004. Prior to opening the Barcelona branch, he worked as a senior English teacher, lead teacher-trainer, and Director of Studies and Training in Spain, Britain and Mexico. He has given talks and workshops related to teaching and training at many international conference.

During this time, he has held senior academic positions in the British Council, including Head of Cambridge Examinations (Catalonia), and has worked as an Academic Consultant developing teacher training programmes for other training organisations in Prague and Spain. He has also developed and coordinated onsite and online training courses and has been training teachers since the year 2000. He holds a Trinity College Licentiate Diploma in TESOL, a Post-Graduate Diploma in TESOL, and an MA in TEFL from University of Reading, specialising in teacher-training.

KERRY BRENNAN

Kerry has been working in the language field for many years. Upon graduating from S.U.N.Y. Geneseo with a BSc in Communicative Disorders and Sciences, she worked as a speech therapist in NYC with bilingual and multilingual children. During that time, she received her bilingual extension from T.C. at Columbia University and was trained in EFL. After several years of working within this context she decided to continue her education by living and working abroad. She first embarked upon this adventure in Mexico and then later moved to Spain. In order to be certified to teach in other countries she completed her TESOL certificate in 2005. Upon completing the course, she continued to teach English in a variety of contexts and later went on to complete her MA degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Barcelona. Currently, she continues teaching English to adults and children, studying languages and learning about different cultures as well as conducting research towards a PhD, which she was finally awarded in December 2017.

TOM FLAHERTY

Tom is a freelance teacher, teacher-trainer, materials developer and researcher based in Barcelona. With seven years experience teaching English to students of all ages, nationalities and levels around the world, he now focuses on teaching Business English, Academic English and Exam English. Recently, he has completed his MA in Applied Linguistics, and is now looking to start his Ph.D in October, focussing specifically on classroom-based research. This experience has allowed him to gain experience in other areas of the ELT profession, including: working as the Director of Studies at a UK-based summer school; writing in-company materials for several clients; and training new teachers, both at ITA and through several teacher training workshops and conferences. In his free time, he enjoys reading, travelling and cooking.

JUNE MEYER

June, a native of Chicago, has been a teacher for nearly twenty years. After earning her BA in Art History, she moved to Barcelona, where she became interested in teaching English. She later returned to the U.S. to get an MA in TESOL. While working towards this degree, she taught English to international students at the University of New Mexico and designed and supervised an alternative program for adults and “at risk” teenagers to help them attain basic literacy skills. After returning to Barcelona in 2000, she taught English at the University of Barcelona and the North American Institute. Currently, she is teaching English for Political Science at UAB and in-company business classes. For the past ten years, she has especially enjoyed working as a teacher trainer to help less experienced teachers gain some expertise in teaching English to non-native speakers. In her very little free time, June enjoys traveling and just chilling out on her rooftop terrace, or near this beach.

MARTINA VESCO

Martina, originally from Venice, Italy, has lived, worked and studied in Venice, London, and Barcelona. With her strong linguistic and people skills she has worked and studied in tourism, administration, language teaching (in English and Italian), as well as other anthropological and cultural areas. Since she has completed her English teaching certificate at INTESOL Spain in 2013, she has been working in various ways directly for the school. Her main tasks have included organizing events and classes for students, office work, and some language teaching and translation/interpretation.

CHRIS BUFFEY

Chris, like so many budding TEFL teachers, arrived wanting a new life and a new career, in a new country, but was unsure as to which way the wind would take him. He enrolled on one of our training courses in March 2010, and never went back home.

Chris has become one of our many success stories,  after completing our course in 2010, he went on to specialise in teaching Business English in some of the best-known and largest companies in Barcelona. He has also recently, been appointed Co-Director of Studies in one of Spain’s oldest academies.

He has collaborated with ITA Barcelona since 2015, giving advice and support to our trainees for their teaching practice with his straightforward, practical feedback. His experience in the corporate field is invaluable for the Business English module.

Prior to teaching, he worked in finance and catering management for nearly 20 years in the UK.
